Discerning the Will of God: A Guide to Living in Obedience

The Book of James Message Series | Week 09 | James 4:13-17

Introduction

Welcome to our blog series on discerning the will of God. In this post, we will be diving deep into the topic of living in obedience to God's will. If you've ever wondered how to make decisions that align with God's plan for your life, this blog is for you.

Understanding God's Will

In James chapter 4, we see that James presents a test for believers: whose will are you choosing to live by? Are you living according to God's will or your own? This is an important question to consider as it reveals whether we are truly following Jesus or not.

God's will is not just about the decisions we make, but rather, it is about who we are becoming in the process. While it is important to seek God's guidance in making decisions, we should also focus on what God is doing in and through us during the journey.

Many times, we get so fixated on finding the right answer or making the right choices that we overlook the transformation taking place within us. God wants to shape us and conform us to the image of Christ, and we must not miss out on what He is doing in the middle of our circumstances.

Responding to God's Will

In James 4, we learn that there are four different ways people respond to God's will: ignorance, obedience, arrogance, and disobedience. Ignorance is not a negative word; it simply means not knowing God or His will. However, as we grow in our faith, we should strive to live in obedience to God's will and avoid arrogance or disobedience.

Living in obedience requires surrendering our own will and desires to God. It means trusting Him even when we don't have all the answers or when His plans differ from ours. It means walking in humility and seeking to please God with our lives.

Practical Steps for Discerning God's Will

1. Prayer: Prayer is our intimate connection with God. We should approach Him boldly, seeking His guidance and wisdom in every decision we make. Prayer is not just a one-way conversation; it is a two-way communication where we speak and listen to God.

2. Study the Word: The Bible is a powerful tool for discerning God's will. It provides us with principles and guidelines for living in line with His plan. As we spend time in the Word, we gain a deeper understanding of who God is and how He wants us to live.

3. Journaling: Keeping a journal can help us record our prayers, thoughts, and experiences with God. It allows us to reflect on His faithfulness and helps us remember what He has done in our lives. Journaling can also serve as a reminder of our commitment to follow God's will.

4. Seek Godly Counsel: Surrounding ourselves with wise and godly individuals can provide valuable insights and guidance when making decisions. Seeking counsel from trusted mentors or spiritual leaders can help us gain a different perspective and discern God's will more effectively.

God's Will for Your Life

God's will for your life can be summarized in three key areas: salvation, being Spirit-filled, and sanctification.

1. Salvation: God's will is for you to respond to the gospel and be saved. He desires a personal relationship with you and for you to experience His forgiveness and grace.

2. Spirit-Filled Life: God's will is for you to be filled with His Spirit. This means walking in His power and surrendering to His leading in every aspect of your life. It involves living a life of obedience and allowing the fruit of the Spirit to manifest in your actions and attitudes.

3. Sanctification: God's will is for you to be sanctified, to become more like Christ. This is an ongoing process of being transformed and renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. It involves separating yourself from sin and striving to live a holy and righteous life.

Conclusion

Discerning and living in obedience to God's will is a lifelong journey. It requires prayer, studying the Word, seeking counsel, and surrendering our own desires to God. As we align our lives with His will, we can experience His guidance, peace, and fulfillment. Remember, God's will is more about who you are becoming in the process and less about the specific decisions you make. Trust Him, seek Him, and walk in obedience to His Word.
