Who's Will Are You Living By?

The Book of James Message Series | Week 08 | James 4:13-17

Introduction

In the Book of James, James presents a series of tests that determine whether someone is truly following Jesus. These tests focus on how one handles temptation, trials, relationships, speech, and wisdom. James emphasizes the importance of aligning one's life with God's Word, acknowledging that misalignment is inevitable but should be followed by a surrender to God's transforming power. In chapter four, James introduces another test: whose will are you living by?

Living in Ignorance

Many individuals live their lives in ignorance, unaware of God's existence or His will for their lives. They make plans based solely on their desires and without considering God's guidance. James cautions against this mindset, reminding believers that they do not know what the future holds and that life is fleeting. He encourages them to seek God's will in their decisions and acknowledge His sovereignty.

Living in Obedience

Alternatively, James calls believers to live in obedience to God's will. Rather than making plans without considering God, they should humbly submit to His guidance and trust in His wisdom. This does not mean constantly seeking divine approval for every decision but rather aligning their hearts with God's desires and seeking His guidance through prayer and Scripture.

Living in Arrogance

Some individuals believe in God's existence and acknowledge His will, but they arrogantly believe that their own plans are superior. They boast about their achievements and disregard the impact their decisions may have on their relationship with God. James condemns this arrogance and highlights the evil nature of such boasting. He reminds believers that they are not in control and that their plans should align with God's will.

Living in Disobedience

The most troubling response to God's will is living in disobedience. These individuals know God's specific will for their lives but choose to disobey and pursue their own desires instead. James uses the example of Jonah, who disobeyed God's call to preach to the people of Nineveh. Living in disobedience hinders believers from experiencing the fullness of God's blessings and purpose for their lives.

Conclusion

James challenges believers to evaluate their response to God's will. Are they living in ignorance, obedience, arrogance, or disobedience? Regardless of where they find themselves, James emphasizes the importance of surrendering to God's will and trusting in His plan. God has a general will for all believers and a specific will for each individual. By aligning their hearts with God's desires and seeking His guidance, believers can walk in obedience and experience the transformative power of God in their lives.
